You’ve booked your newborn photoshoot Dublin session, and now you’re wondering what you actually need to do before the day. The honest answer is less than you think. A little preparation goes a long way toward making the whole experience feel easy for everyone, especially your baby.
Here is a practical checklist based on what works well in real sessions.
Timing: Book Early, Shoot Early
The best window for newborn photography is within the first 14 days. During this period babies are sleepier, more flexible, and tend to curl into those natural tucked positions that photograph so well. After two weeks they become more alert, which changes the style and pace of a session rather than making it impossible.
Most photographers ask you to book during pregnancy and confirm the exact date once baby arrives. If your baby is here and you haven’t booked yet, don’t worry. Sessions at three or four weeks still produce beautiful, tender images. They simply have a different feel.
Feeding Before the Session
A full baby tends to be a settled baby. Feed your little one right before the session starts, or plan to feed when you arrive at the studio. Feeding time is always built into the schedule, so there is never any pressure to rush through it.
If you are breastfeeding and things are still being established, that is completely fine. Time is allowed for whatever the baby needs.
What to Bring
Keep it simple. Here is what actually matters on the day:
- Extra nappies and wipes: more than you think you will need
- A spare change of clothes for baby
- A dummy or pacifier if your baby uses one
- A muslin or cloth for burping and clean ups
- A bottle of water and a snack for yourself
- Any personal items you would like in the photos: a blanket from a grandparent, a meaningful toy, baby’s coming home outfit
Props, wraps, and backdrops are all provided by the studio. There is nothing else you need to source or organise beforehand.
What to Dress Baby In
For the journey to the studio, dress baby in something easy to remove. A simple zip onesie works well. Anything with lots of buttons or layers will only slow things down at the start.
During the session, your photographer will guide you. Many newborn sessions use bare skin or simple wraps that the studio provides. If there is a specific outfit you would love to include, bring it. But wardrobe is genuinely the least important thing to think about. The simplest images are often the ones people return to most.
What Parents Should Wear
If you will be in any of the photos — and there is good reason to be — soft, neutral tones work best. Creams, whites, light greys, and muted earths all sit quietly beside the baby without competing. Bold patterns and bright colours tend to draw the eye away from the person you actually want to focus on.
More than anything, wear something you feel comfortable in. You have just had a baby. Something that feels like you matters more than something that looks photogenic on a mood board.
Temperature and Comfort
Newborn studios are kept warm, warmer than you would expect, and warmer than is comfortable once you are sitting still in a jumper. This is intentional. Babies need warmth to stay settled, particularly when they are undressed or lightly wrapped.
Dress in layers you can easily remove. You will be glad of it within the first twenty minutes.
Letting the Session Unfold
A typical newborn session runs two to three hours, sometimes longer. There will be nappy changes, feeds, and moments where the baby simply will not settle. That is entirely normal. An experienced photographer will move through it without any sense of urgency.
The best thing you can do on the day is let go of any fixed idea of how it should go. The sessions that produce the most genuine, quiet images are usually the ones where parents stop anticipating and simply trust the process.
Siblings and Family Members
If older children will be part of the session, plan their portion for the beginning when energy is highest. Toddlers and young children have a short window of cooperation, and a good photographer will move through that part quickly and without any fuss.
A small activity or snack helps keep siblings occupied during the portions of the session focused solely on the newborn.
For broader family sessions that include grandparents or older children, family photographer Dublin sessions can be arranged alongside or separately from the newborn shoot.
