My 8 Favourite Parks for Family Portrait Photos in Dublin

Dublin is full of absolutely gorgeous vast and smaller green spaces, each with its own character and light. Over the years, I’ve explored almost every corner of the city searching for those perfect spots where families can relax, laugh, and simply be themselves in front of my camera. I always find something interesting and new. And of course there has to be a little walled garden, glass house or even mini farm attached to it.

Here are my eight favourite parks for family portrait sessions — each one offering a unique atmosphere and backdrop for timeless photographs.

1. St Stephen’s Green, timeless classic in the heart of Dublin Town
Right in the heart of Dublin, this classic city park is filled with tree-lined paths, elegant bridges and a peaceful lake. Early morning light here is soft and golden, perfect for natural, joyful portraits.

2. Iveagh Gardens-secret garden
Often called Dublin’s “secret garden,” this hidden gem has a waterfall, rockery and maze — all creating a magical, almost cinematic feel. It’s wonderful for families who love a touch of artistry in their photos.

3. Marlay Park-one of my favorites.
Stunning in spring. Located in Rathfarnham, Marlay is ideal for children to run and play while we capture genuine smiles. With open lawns, old trees and charming walled , it’s one of my go-to parks for relaxed, candid portraits.

4. St Anne’s Park-with a  stunning rose garden for maternity portraits
In Clontarf, St Anne’s offers a variety of looks within one location — from colourful rose gardens to shady woodland paths. It’s fantastic for families wanting both elegant and playful images in a single session.

5. Merrion Square Park-another town hidden gem
Surrounded by Georgian red brick houses, this park brings a refined, classic Dublin feel. I love using its flower-filled corners and historic backdrop for timeless family portraits and portrait photography.

6. Phoenix Park
Europe’s largest city park gives endless possibilities — from open fields and majestic trees to deer wandering in the distance. I personally take bike trips to the places where japanese deer roam free. Its vastness allows for peaceful, natural sessions with plenty of space for children to explore.

7. Bushy Park-great for family portraits by the pond
A south-Dublin favourite with ponds, woodland and winding paths. The light filtering through the trees here in late afternoon is beautiful, creating a warm, intimate atmosphere for family photos.

8 Cabinteely Park-my local star

I have a personal attachment to this park as it has been a playground for my children growing up. It has a stunning view over Dublin Bay, a very cool playground, a river and a slope. It has a lot of 18th century charm and a grand house of the original owners. The house is open for visitors in the summer. There is a cafe and a mini japanese garden. What else ?

Each of these parks offers something special — from the elegance of Merrion Square to the wild expanse of Phoenix Park. The right location depends on your family’s personality: playful, serene, or a little bit adventurous. Wherever we shoot, my goal is always the same — to create natural, heartfelt portraits that capture your family’s story in the most beautiful light Dublin has to offer.
