A Wedding Portrait in the Heart of Dalkey — Captured by Matchbox Photography

There’s something magical about an Irish pub — the warm light, the sound of laughter, the clinking of glasses, and the timeless sense of community that wraps around you like an old friend. When Marie and Patrick told me they wanted part of their wedding portraits taken in their favourite Dalkey Duck pub, I knew it would be something special.  The Maries and Patrick ceremony was very moving. They were surrounded by lots of friends and family members from around the world. And so much love was there to be witnessed including their little baby girl in the cutest white dress.

 Authentic wedding photography

As a photographer, I’m always searching for moments that feel authentic — and this one was exactly that. After a beautiful ceremony overlooking Dalkey village, we wandered through the cobbled streets of Dalkey, still glowing with that just-married joy. The summer light was soft and golden, and when we stepped into the pub, it felt like stepping into another world — one filled with warmth, laughter, and stories.

How to create a natural wedding photo in a pub?

My advice is always the same: keep it simple. A pub is a busy place usually dark so a photographer needs to do scouting and be prepared; always that simplifies things a lot. I have been photographing weddings in Ireland for years and I know what kind of equipment I need for the ambient light. But I also keep in mind that each photo story is entirely different from the other.

Marie’s  elegant lace dress contrasted beautifully with the dark wood interiors and the amber tones of the bar. Patrick, ever the gentleman, ordered two pints of Guinness, and the barman raised his glass in a toast. The candid smiles, the sparkle in their eyes, and the little glances between them told a story more powerful than any pose could.

Photographing in a pub might seem unconventional, but it’s those personal, meaningful spaces that make wedding portraits truly memorable. The cosy, lived-in atmosphere reflected everything that made Marie and Patrick’s day so genuine — love, laughter, and a touch of Irish charm.

Mind you there are so many pubs to choose from it is always safe to use your local, the one that you know very well and you know the people who work there and come for the pints. You can even sit at your favourite corner table when possible!
